The Sacred Rock
This is the name given to a flat fronted stone erected upon a great pedestal. It is a polished monolith of 3 meters in height and with a base of 7 meters, whose shape reminds one of a feline. From another angle, it takes the shape of one of the mountains neighbouring Machu Picchu. It is a reference point that designates the Northern limit of the town, and the beginning of the access walk to Wayna Picchu.
Given its characteristics, and because of the two «huayranas» (rectangular buildings of three walls), it is supposed to have been a ritual square. |
